WE ARE A GLOBAL COMMUNITY
CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD TACKLES POVERTY
About us
South Africa, a country whose vast diversities earned it the title of the Rainbow nation united under the principle of Ubuntu, “I am because we are”; has overcome numerous challenges post the end of a painful era, Apartheid. This dark period left the largest portion of the population politically, economically, and socially oppressed. However, despite achieving political freedom, some 28 years later, the Rainbow nation is still battling to lift the majority of its citizens out of poverty, where they remain stuck in an economic desert where social oppression is a daily experience.
South Africa is ranked the most unequal country in the world reflected in the bottom 50% of the population earning only 10% of the country’s income and has not managed to accumulate any significant wealth while on the other end of the scale the top 10% of the population earns 60% of the country’s income and own 90% of the wealth accumulated.
Confucianism argues that governing starts with enriching people but requires avoiding excessive differentiation between the rich and the poor. EESUp, an acronym for Economic Empowerment and Social Upliftment, terms this as common prosperity loosely defined as capitalism rid of all greed.
